Sadly, Whole Vegetarian is no longer wholly vegetarian. (Stephen Hui)

With the recent upheaval at Vancouver’s Whole Vegetarian, perhaps a name change is in order. Unfortunately, “Half Omnivore” doesn’t have quite the same ring to it.

In all seriousness, however, there’s sad news on two fronts as far as this vegan-friendly Chinese restaurant is concerned.

First of all, its original location at 3068 Main Street in Mount Pleasant closed on May 31. In a May 30 post on its Facebook page, Whole Vegetarian stated:

Tomorrow is our last day
We’ll close it forever.
Thank you for all customers whether you like whole vegetarian restaurant or not

Secondly, Whole Vegetarian is now serving meats other than those of the mock variety at its remaining location—1018 Beach Avenue in the False Creek North area of downtown Vancouver. Last month, the restaurant posted its new non-vegetarian menu on Facebook. This menu features beef, chicken, pork, and seafood dishes.

The shuttering of Whole Vegetarian’s South Main location came a week after the Slow Bean, a vegetarian café in the Downtown Eastside, closed its doors.
